Mussel Watch

Mussel Watch

Whatcom MRC is one of the partners in the Washington State Regional Stormwater Monitoring Program, which identifies and maps areas of contamination in marine waters. Information is collected by setting out mussels in predator-resistant cages and then later analyzing mussel tissue for accumulated contaminants.

In 2017/18, the Whatcom MRC will monitor mussels placed under a stormwater outfall in the Whatcom waterway. This will allow the MRC to share important data about toxic contaminants in the community's marine water.
